Growing fall potatoes

This year I’m trying something different with potatoes. In my growing zone there’s plenty of time to grow a spring and fall crop. I’ve always grown potatoes in the spring so I decided to change things up and see what kind of crop I can get in the fall.

The two varieties I am growing are:

German Butterball — This is an good all purpose potato with golden skin, flaky flesh and excellent winter storage. The description says that this variety has a buttery flavor built in. I’m excited to see if that is the case. Who doesn’t love a buttery potato?

Red La Soda — I was looking for a good reliable red potato variety and Red La Soda seems to fit the bill. This well rounded potato is good boiled, fried, or baked. It has winter storage potential.  I also choose this potato because it has been adapted for southern gardeners due to its ability to tolerate heat and drought.
